Why?

Well, why not? There are a few other confession sites on the web, but they did not do what I envisioned, or they cost money to post or read confessions, or they just look crappy. My biggest design philosophy is: no crap. This site was designed with this idea from the ground up, with a minimum of crap. It also lets me get some more experience on the web and a chance to exercise my message board software.

Hopefully it will help some people get things off their chest, make them feel better. For those who only read the confessions, hopefully they will get a good minute or two's worth of entertainment from the site. That's what it is ultimately all about, to be a site where people come to see what other people are doing.

Are people really anonymous?

Yes, as much as they can be. I track nothing - no IP's, no cookies, I ask for no names or email addresses. For a short period of time (up to two hours), the IP addresses of every access to the site is logged - but after this short wait, even that record is permanently erased from the site's access logs. Unless a confessor puts identifying remarks in his or her posts, there is no way for me to tell who is who.

How can you be sure the confessions are real?

I can't. Other than asking that exaggeration be kept to a minimum, because the posts are anonymous, I cannot verify any of them. Keep this in mind.

What other kinds of sites are out there?

I used to keep a sort of short-list of the sites that I thought were the best competition for this site. But I found the list to be out of date as sites came and went. Some of the ones that are now defunct include CollegeConfession.com, Confess-It.com, TheConfessor.com, IGot2.com, and MrConfession.com.

Of the list of the best, only a few remain. YourConfessions.Homestead.com is still pretty active, but the site itself needs a look-and-feel upgrade. MostEmbarrassingMoment.com is a nice-looking site, but is infected with links to sites that will fill your screen with pop-up ads. I don't like that its stories are not dated - it is hard to tell what's new. NotProud.com is a nicely designed site, but it is all one-way; people confess, but you cannot reply to confessions. Of all the sites, it is most like this one in terms of philosophy.

Many of the "confession" domain names are just porn sites with a stealthy domain name. I won't list them here.

There are also lots of domains that are for sale. I don't list them here either.

I read a message the other day, now it is gone... What happened?

Messages from confessors and replies are posted immediately. The Webmaster scans the boards every day or so, looking at all new messages. If one is found to have violated the conditions outlined in the Privacy Policy then the message will be deleted at that time. From time to time, messages are moved to more appropriate categories; and more rarely, new categories are added, and messages from old categories might be moved to the new category. One last possibility - if the original message is over a year old, it has probably been moved to an archive board. See the Archive Page for more information.

I came back to read an older confession, but I cannot find it.

As the site ages, confessions do, too. Older confessions are being archived to a read-only area. These older confessions can still be read, but cannot be replied to. See the Archives Page for more information.
